The AB 116 is fully in line with the philosophy that’s underpinned our production since the start – a winning combination of extensive technical content, high performance and outstanding sailing comfort,” says Marco Arnaboldi, technical manager of AB Yachts. “The hull, which is quite deep and has a nineteen-degree dihedral to stern, is very stable and can easily support extremely high speeds.” She is a very fast-moving yacht! Her three 2,400 MTUs coupled with MJP or Rolls-Royce Kamewa waterjets means that she can reach 46 knots with ease, with a range of 500 miles. And we’re not talking about an off-shore hotrod – what we’re looking at is a 36.20-metre luxury cruiser in full possession of all the bells and whistles the modern owner demands!
Advanced materials have been used in her build, creating a light yet sturdy construction (Kevlar reinforced fibreglass and vacuum-processed Divinycell sandwich). She displays the sleek, tapered and harmonious lines of an open, emphasised by an iridescent, lightly gilded livery. There’s also a generous flying bridge – though this, in fact, is invisible to onlookers. “The interiors,” says Arnaboldi, “are entirely custom-built. Clients have a wide range of options for choosing layouts, woods, fabrics and all the details, including taps, bathroom fittings and door handles.” So the description that follows, and the photos illustrating the feature, refer to a particular example called Musa, furnished by Barbara Tognon, the architect chosen by the owner.
Designed for long cruises, the AB 116 has two garages – the very large on aft can host a 5.40-meters tender and a jetski, while the smaller forward garage can be used to hold an inflatable service dinghy or another jetski.
In this case, it serves a totally different purpose, acting as storage space with wine cellar, extra freezers and so on. The yacht is mainly intended for the Med, so she has generous exterior spaces, with an aft cockpit equipped with a large sun pad, a dinette and forward saloon with a social area and another roomy sun pad.
This offers a degree of privacy that’s especially appreciated when the yacht is moored stern on to the jetty. A lovely semi-circular glass screen provides access to the single-space saloon. Here there is a conversation area with leather sofas, coffee table, pop-up 50” TV and a bar, plus a dining table with fossil marble top, capable of seating ten people. A half screen in the centre, with a built-in unit for dishes and cutlery, separates the futuristic carbon and brown leather command centre, with two adjustable chairs, while leaving the pilot a 360-degree view. The four guest cabins are on the lower deck, amidships. While the full- beam stateroom is on aft. This space is illuminated by four portholes and has a desk/ dressing table and small sofas. The retractable TV at the foot of the bed, flanked by two padded seats, is a new solution. Further forward are two twin cabins and the VIP accommodation, all with en-suite bathroom. There’s also a fifth single cabin, a space that can also be fitted out as a gym, study or children’s playroom. The corridor has a damask mirror and leather panels and a unit with a backlit onyx top. The crew area lies forward, it has independent access. This section of the boat consists of an extremely well-equipped galley and three twin cabins. The woods chosen by the owner are basically in wengé and oak, which blend in with the restrained colours of the fabrics and leather to create a contemporary, elegant and relaxing style. The flying bridge, with the auxiliary command station, has two enormous sun pads and two joining tables. The yacht features perfect soundproofing, a total absence of vibration and top-end facilities and equipment. A very special solution has been adopted on aft, where a section of the teak swim platform rises vertically to allow the tender to be launched and landed on rollers at water level.
